[Via Satellite 10-10-2014] General Dynamics C4 Systems, a business unit of General Dynamics, recently completed a four-day satellite communications (satcom) demonstration using AN/PRC-155 radios over the United States Navy’s Mobile User Objective System (MUOS). During the test, MUOS-enabled radios provided secure voice and data communications, as well as in-flight position and location data, from a U.S. Air Force C-17 mobility aircraft over the Pacific Ocean.
The C-17 communicated with a simulated airlift operations center at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. The General Dynamics-built MUOS Manpack PRC-155 radio also routed flight-path changes from the command center to the pilot and aircrew, displaying the information on portable cockpit mission displays through a loosely coupled airborne networking suite.
The PRC-155, uses the MUOS communications waveform based on commercial cellular networks technologies to connect with the satellite system. The radio is also the first to provide secure airborne voice and data connectivity over MUOS in Polar regions.
